Your job, your work, and your life are so intertwined, they can’t be separated. Unemployment and underemployment effect every aspect of your well being including finances, relationships, health, and your sense of self. When a change in your work or employment happens, large or small; the balance of your time, resources, and energy changes. You might need to work harder or just different on your job search, but as Comedian Milton Berle said, "If opportunity doesn't knock, then build a door."
You may be a person who is spontaneous and loves change. Every day is an adventure. Or you might like a predictable schedule where you know what to expect. When staying home is part of a solution to a world heath pandemic, with no concrete end date in sight, you might feel like you have lost your sense of adventure or your sense of security. The air balloon that felt so secure flying high in the sky, suddenly pops. All of your plans have changed, except for maybe watching your next Netflix show.
We each have different personalities and experiences. We adapt to change differently just as our needs change and the world seems to change around us unexpectedly. Or is it? We can expect change and expect the unexpected realizing things are always changing, sometimes more suddenly than other times. We may rise to the top of the hierarchy of needs as Maslow described it, or circle around to safety, security, and physiological needs. More often, it is the fear of going back to the lower level needs. Many of us are still carving out a sense of belonging. We can get lost in the circle of needs and lose focus, getting lost in the fog of what to do next.
What can you do now?
First be aware of your stress, fears, conflicts, unsettled emotions, and relationship challenges. You may be feeling both physical and emotional stress. Understand your needs, what you have control over, and what you can do now.
Second you can be part of a supportive community. The Success Unlimited Virtual Job Club will help you broaden your connections and get comfortable sharing your needs, strengths, and accomplishments. When experiencing a disruptive change, new connections help shape a positive future.
Third you can share with others and find people who have similar needs and challenges.
With change, even if there is a downturn in the economy, there are new opportunities. Next week we will look at ways you can explore opportunities now, and possible new directions that might better fit your needs.

Many people are experiencing a high level of stress due to lifestyle changes and feeling of uncertainty. If you are experiencing stress that simple stress management techniques can't alleviate, seek professional assistance with your health care provider. Many situations can be managed with a virtual appointment. You can check resources for free or reduced cost for care at: www.healthcare.gov or www.freeclinics.com (these are not referrals, they are simply resources). You can call or text, www.hopeline-nc.org. They say that you can talk and they will listen.
